Book Review: Intangible

Intangible
Author: J. Meyers
Publish Date: January 2012
Publisher: Createspace

Twins Sera and Luke Raine have a well-kept secret—she heals with a touch of her hand, he sees the future. All their lives they’ve helped those in need on the sly. They’ve always thought of their abilities as being a gift.

Then Luke has a vision that Sera is killed. That gift they’ve always cherished begins to feel an awful lot like a curse. Because the thing about Luke’s ability? He’s always right. And he can’t do anything about it.
(GoodReads)

Firstly, I want to thank Ms. Meyers for asking me to read the book. I am most humbly honored to be asked.

Paranormal books seem, to be the mainstream of YA fiction right now. There’s no getting away from it. Thus everytime I pick one up I’m slightly skeptical. How many times can a good story be written with the same base characters? I’m pleased to announce this is probably the most original story I’ll read all year.

Sera and Luke are people that I would have as friends in school. They’re great all around people, but they’re not snooty with it and they don’t act superior with their gifts either. For them it just is, and it doesn’t change who they are but rather enhances it. What’s even greater is they’re not all angsty about their gifts. Their personalities aren’t some emo wanna be rollercoaster that so many paranormal books tread. It was a great relief to have such outstanding and well written characters.

While trying not to give much away about the plot, I will say the story line isn’t something I’ve read or found similar premise for in any other story. This definitely stands out as a very unique one of a kind premise. It was such a good, clean written story I’m very surprised this came from an independent author.

Overall it’s definitely a good, well thought out book. I would definitely recommend this for all paranormal lovers. I’m not too fond of the cliff hanger, but that’s only because I hate waiting. It’s rare I give out the cake as I’m very picky with my books, but this one definitely takes the cake.

Book Tag!

No better way to do a reopening than a Book Tag! ^_^ Thanks Mel.

Book Tag!

Well, the awesome Mel over at Mel’sBook Blog as tagged me! I’m game. Let’s get started. This looks like much fun ^_^ Here are the rules!

THE RULES:

1) You must post the rules.
2) Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post and then create eleven new questions to ask the people you’ve tagged.
3) Tag eleven people and link to them on your post.
4) Let them know you’ve tagged them!

And here are the questions Mel asked:

1-If you could travel to any time period in history, which would you choose and why?

I think I would enjoy traveling to before the West was conquered. I’m of native American descent so I think it would be a life altering experience to see how my ancestors lived before our land was taken.

2-What is your favorite book?

I don’t only have one favorite.  It really depends on my mood and what I feel like reading at the time. I suppose if I had to pick an all time favorite I would pick Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins for contemporary and The Iron King by Julie Kagawa for paranormal. I have favorites for steampunk and dystopia too but these are the top.

3-When a book is made into a movie, do you prefer to read the book before or after you've seen it?

I always read the book before watching the movie. Or I at least try to. The last time I tried I couldn’t finish the book it was terrible.

4-Who is your favorite actor?
My favorite actor is . . . hm . . . I have this weakness for Scottish actors, and my current heart throb is Gerard Butler.

5-Who would you say has been the biggest influence in your life thus far?

I think my biggest influence is all my twitter/blogger friends. There are a bunch of authors and bloggers and publishers that give great advise and a lot of them are really nice and down home people. It’s great talking to them.

6-If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I don’t think I would change anything about myself.  While I’m not perfect and I have several flaws I’m unhappy with if I changed that then I would no longer be the person that I am. And overall I like the person that I am.

7-What is your favorite color?

I like purples a lot and reds.

8-Do you prefer to shop in the store or online?

Depends on what I’m shopping for and the time of year. I do not step foot in a store between thanksgiving and new years.

9-What's your favorite flavor jelly or jam?

Apple. Hands down.

10-Do you have a favorite superhero? Who is it?

I think it would have to be Batman or Ironman. The reason is because they’re real people. They don’t have superpowers yet they still save people time and time again.

11-What is the best book you've read so far this year?

Best book I’ve read so far this year would be . . . well it’s a tie between Dreaming Awake by Gwen Hayes and Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi.

Ok, so here are the bloggers I'm tagging:

8.) What kind of music do you listen to while reading?
9.) What’s the best thing an author has ever said to you?
10.) What book do you feel should definitely be a movie?
11.) What is an awesome must be read YA book that you would recommend to all?

NO BLOG DRAMA HIATUS

Dear Followers,

Book Blogging is something we bloggers do because we enjoy and love it. This is an opinion that most of you would agree with, right? There’s just something fun and special about discovering a new book and sharing how you feel about it with others, regardless of whether those feelings are good or bad. Blogs are meant for sharing; unique reflections of the people who run them, and we feel that many book bloggers have lost sight of this simple truth lately. There have been some problems with certain people in our community constantly feeling that they are the authority on how individuals should run their own book blogs. These problems include:

1)      Public comments about not being able to take other bloggers seriously if they do or don’t a certain thing.

2)      Judging whether a blogger is good or bad by the frequency of their posts or number of memes they participate in.

3)      Attacking a blogger for writing a negative, but respectful, review.

And it’s problems like these that create drama, drama that sucks all the fun out of book blogging.

THIS NEEDS TO STOP.

Therefore, some of us fellow bloggers are banning together to start a No Blog Drama (#NBD) campaign. This entails us taking a hiatus from our individual blogs to work on a collaborative blog (the Reading Salon), a blog where we will attempt to put the fun back into book blogging without any drama. We just want to express our thoughts and feelings on books openly without feeling judged or attacked over the manner in how we do so, which is definitely something everyone in our community is entitled to do.

So as part of our No Blog Drama (#NBD) campaign, our motto will be live and let live, and we would like to make a pledge with this motto, which is:

We, the bloggers at the Reading Salon, promise to not pass judgment on the way other bloggers conduct their individual blogs. We will respect all fellow bloggers, and allow them to live and let live without any unnecessary blog drama.

Also, if you have ever felt bullied or judged as a blogger, or feel strongly about ending blog drama, we invite you to join our campaign. If you want No Blog Drama, then say so. Voice your feelings, and don’t be afraid. You are welcome to use our #NBD badge if you like.
